The American-run NHL does everything it can to keep its numerous failed US franchises alive - such as Phoenix, Nashville, Miami, Tampa, Colorado, NY Islanders - and prevent its owners from relocating to Canadian cities. Hamilton, Winnipeg, Saskatoon and Québec City wouldn't generate TV ratings in the US, they say.
The few existing Canadian NHL teams are cash cows for the league, propping up the aformentioned failing franchises with the NHL's revenue sharing system.
Meanwhile, in dozens of medium to large hockey-mad Canadian cities, anywhere from 5,000 to 15,000 fans buy surprisingly expensive tickets and sell out arenas just to watch a bunch of teenagers who earn $70/week playing junior hockey... because that's all there is.
Canada dominates most international hockey tournament, 9 out of 10 Canadians follow the sport religiously practically from birth, but there's no Canadian professional league.
Strange place.
Anyway......
If any of you are considering placing a bet on the Winter Olympics, keep in mind the ice surface in Vancouver will be 200x85 (standard North American/NHL size) rather than 200x100 used in most other international competitions. This makes a huge difference in the speed of the game, a skilled team used to 200x100 will suddenly have far less reation time before getting hit. This won't affect the Swedes, Russians, Czechs and Finns too much as many of their players are in the NHL and accustomed to 200x85, but rather the Swiss, Latvians, Germans, Norwegians etc.
It's like Roddick on clay.
