HAPPY EASTER !!

Crazy weather around at the moment with rain aplenty. That wont help picking winners for Saturday as the tracks are likely to be rain affected and that often produces hard to predict results. Hopefully the sun will emerge before Saturday's racing commences and improve the track ratings. As you may have noticed I was under pressure to produce some decent lay bets last Saturday and as luck would have it the lay bets all thankfully failed to salute. I'd like to say that was a direct result of my skillful picks, however the truth is that last Saturday had results that were heaven sent for Bookies, and blind Freddy could have picked any three choices at random and the success rate would have been high. Just nine winning selections on the day and that was a pretty poor result and a good indicator of a day where winners with poor to average form emerged victorious. Of course its Easter this weekend and that means plenty of chocolates for the kids and a long weekend away for the adults.
It also means that its race time for the annual Oakbank races in South Australia. Its a picnic style meeting with one meeting on Saturday and another on Monday. Picnic races here commenced in 1873 and were known for their Steeplechase races, which had a fallen log as a hurdle on the course and the log remains there to this day. The spectacle of Steeplechase and Jumps races are no longer included on the program due to successful court protests by animal welfare folk. Notwithstanding that its still a must go to event for keen horse racing enthusiasts.
Number two son has Coastal Raider set to go around at Doomben on Wednesday 3rd April. Looks a tough race however the $38K in prizemoney is definitely an incentive.! My old favourite in Coolmeans is off to Townsville to contest Race 2 a 1609 race on the 4th April. He is a last start winner so hopefully he can produce the goods again on Wednesday.

Last week a foal by the champion mare Winx was sold at Auction at the Sydney Yearling Sales. The price when the hammer fell was $AUD $10m. That's a world record price for a yearling. Guess that underlines how well horse racing is going in Oz!!
One of my favourite races comes around at Ascot next Saturday week with the running of the Quokka over 1200m. If you don't know what a Quokka is have a look below and you can see what a cute little Quokka looks like!. They live on Rottnest Island in Western Australia and the tourists just love them!!
Huge meeting at Randwick on Saturday with the running of events like the Queen Elizabeth Stakes, Sydney Cup, Queen Of The Turf, Champagne Stakes, All Aged Stakes, Australian Stakes, Percy Sykes Stakes and the Provincial Championships. Four Group One races are included here.! That's as good as it gets racing wise in Australia!.

Just nine positive win results last week which together with the Lay Bets results means the punting bank was depleted as a result of poor outcomes. Fingers crossed the good times are ahead of us and this weekend finishes up with a positive. One of the amazing scenes on Saturday was the run and win by one of the Hail Mary runners in the form of Pride of Jenni. She led what was a class field by a furlong coming into the Randwick straight which was simply quite inconceivable. Yes she did give up ground in the run to the line but still had plenty up her sleeve to win by a big margin. Certainly was the talking point after the conclusion of a day where favorites struggled and bookmakers rejoiced. My old Buddy in Coolmeans is nominated for Race 2 at Townsville on the 23rd April. He is about $6K short of accumulating $100k in prizemoney to date so fingers crossed he can bring home the goodies.
It would be remiss of me if I failed to mention that the richest race on Saturday's program is the AUD$5m event known as The Quokka and its race 8 on the Ascot race card. The race has been one of Australian racing real success stories since its inception last year and no doubt its because of those cute little Quokka's (photo above) that run around on Rottnest Island in Western Australia!!.

Just letting you know that Charles 49's tips will be having a holiday until around the beginning of July as my wife and I are heading off to parts of the world that we haven't seen before.
The bulk of our trip will be aboard a Princess cruise boat so hopefully the bar opens 24-7 as I am partial to the odd cocktail or two. Hope the punting Gods are kind to all while I'm doing it tough propping up a bar on a constantly moving deck. Good luck guys! .
