  • Why Do You Trade?

I often find myself asking me this question. The majority of people fail miserably but some still continue to trade and even those who do it successfully could surely have a much more comfortably time doing a job elsewhere.

For a lot of people I suppose it's the fact that it's an independent activity, it's you pitting your wits against everybody else who enters the market. For me it's a lot about the challenge, of course there's the money incentive but I try and look at it as one big video game that you've got to try and master.

So I was just wondering what's everyone's motive for trading?

For fun. I love the buzz of IR horses.

Making a few quid tax free helps.

Maybe I'm doing it all wrong but I don't really find it that much fun, intriguing and annoying at times but definitely not fun.

Money, independance, the chance to choose when to work and from where you like
Tough times don't last. Tough people do.

                1. Money. I can make triple the money I could make anywhere else putting in a fraction of the time. I also know that I have tapped into bare minimum of the money available to be made on here if I feel so inclined to put further effort in.
                2. Time. My time is my own. If I don't want to trade, I don't. Proabably averaging 3 days a week over the last 3 months and probably my best 3 month period to date. (Not including spent money of course :P)
                3. Attention span. Very little in this world has any incentive for me to concentrate on it. If I don't like it, I don't do it. Simple as that.
                4. Numbers. My brain was built on numbers. I have no creative side, everything must be logical, analytical. I have a PS3, Xbox 360, a multitude of games, most are unplayed due to the time I used to spend on an outdated online browser based text game based on mathematical formulas. Numbers seem to be the only thing that stimulate my brain.
                5. Motivation. I have zero motivation in making anybody else rich through devoting my time to them. If I am going to put my time and effort in, I feel I am the one that deserves to be rewarded.

I do it to make money so that I can write this as drink iced tea in Prague while my wife is shopping. I am missing my dogs.

                    Hi D,

I trade for the competition. I'm too old to compete at physical activities so, trading is great and at the end of a session if I've got more money, I've won, less and I've lost. It's a tremendous kick,

                    cheers, MC

Everyone starts off doing it for the money no matter what they say. It only becomes a challenge once you realise it's not that easy to win money but you're too stubborn to give up

I am like most people in that I trade to make money. However I also enjoy trading. I previously owned a small business and was working ridiculously long hours to earn a living. Now I can work on the races for 5 hours a day and make the same amount of money. I gain a great deal of satisfaction out of being able to trade full time and winning.

I started trading as a hobbie 12 months ago , I'm lucky that i own a business that gives me a good living , so I wasn't looking for this as a new career , but at the same time I always want to succeed in everything I do .
This summer I spent a lot of my spare time studying the markets without actually trading , thinking to myself ( what's the secret ?) . I can honestly say that by doing this everything changed , i can confidently say that from what I learnt by studying the markets I could make a living now if I went full time . So the reason I started trading was I seen it as a new challenge , one challenge that's slowly swinging in my direction .

I trade for the fact of not so much the money (as i have a full time career that pays very well) has alot of time off, but more of a challenge i want to set myself like Adam and a few others i know. if you are a very disciplined trader know your system and stick to all the rules you can make £100,000 +
quite adequately. I know some people trade for many hours a day, i trade for a percentage my system and edge should and does make to double my bank every month. After a year if you have calculated everything properly (including the possible losing (drawdowns) you should come out with that sum. Real Patience plays a part in this
One of the things you also have to do is once you have deposited funds to Betfair you see it as gone spent. I only check my PNL at the end of each working month, when trades stop firing at certain prices i know i am doing bad

Happy trading all whatever your reasons
