  • Competition Ideas

As some of you know, our Naps Compettition has been ticking over for quite a few months now. I even offer up a little prize for it as well now.

If anyone has any compettition suggestions, please post them here.

If you like any of the suggestions made on this thread and would participate in that yourself, please thank the poster so I can get an idea of interest.

    Thanks

we can make 2 separate nap's competitions:
we keep the original one for the ones who back horses, and we make a new one for the ones that lay (i'd partecipate in the 2nd )

Actually, I noticed NAP competition was intended only for horse bettors / traders, and I felt it was a lttle bit unfair towards us who never bet or trade any animal that has more than two legs; so, this summer I was coping with the idea to propose another competition for football, and to offer my help in running the competition; though, I was afraid of lack of my spare time, so I thought to myself it was better to leave that idea alone, than to undertake work that I couldn't do properly.

Well, that idea was not my invention at all, but rather my experience from several competitions I have participated (and have intention to continue to participate) over there at Punters Lounge (under nickname "froment") in last two years, including administration of certain groups in competition, which I have done for a year now. You may say then it's just a copy of another competition, but I think there is no field for big inventions - competition is race of participants for the title, where rules and format may be different, but essence remains the same - I've seen the same competitions in some other forums, but, IMHO, these ones at PL are the best ones. So, I'll explain the basics, and if this concept attracts interest, I'm willing to help development of our own set of rules for our competition.

Basically, I think that we can divide all competitions in two groups:

      1. Situation where participants do not impact results of each other, and where outcome of participant's bet depends solely on his own choices.

      2. Situation where participants are confronted with each other, so outcome depends on both their results.

In first case, all participants make a group, or "league"; at the beginning, each participant has the same initial bank - 100 points, 1000 points, etc.; in each round, they announce their bets and stake; obviously, at the end of the round, new bank of each participant will depend on outcome and stake of his bet, and, of course, new table is created on the basis of new bank size. There are details like what stake is allowed (as maximum percent of the bank), what is charge if player doesn't post his bet, or posts after deadline (deduction of the bank, or other warnings), maximum number of matches in combo bet, etc. If there are many players, they can be divided into divisions, and at the end of the "season", the top ones are "promoted" to higher division, and bottom ones are "relegated" to lower division; obviously, new participants start in the lowest division.

Second case... I think it will be easier if I say that it's organized as Champions League; players are divided into groups of four, and in each matchday, two players encounter each other - they both post their bets, score points depending on odds, and one who collects more points, wins that match and gains 3 points, or they may collect the same amount of points, thus winning 1 point each; obviously, there is 6 matchdays (for each player there is "home" and "away" leg) in that group phase, after which winners and runners-up from all groups continue to knock-out stage, until the final. There are slight adjustments, as well - points system depending on odds of selected matches, number of bets when playing home and away, rank decision when two players are tied on points, etc.

This second concept is more attractive, as players are not left to themselves with their bets, but they actively monitor bets of their oponnent. Of course, they don't exclude each other - both competetions may be run in the same time, just if there is enough members willing to participate.

Surely, there are other formats of competitions, too, like "Last Man Standing" (which currently runs at Betfair forums, and during WC in South Africa, was run at OLBG, as well), or "One bet a day" (which is, I think, just like this NAP competition on this forum that you mentioned in first post), or "Correct Score" (where competition's Admin chooses one specific match, and then participants guess correct score on that match, but gain points not only if they guess correct score (it would be, obviously, too difficult), but also if they guess total number of goals, home/draw/away result, number of goals by home team or away team, etc), and so on, but, to my taste, two formats I described above are the most convenient.

The biggest (and only) flaw is supplying source of odds, so all the players have equal opportunities; one solution is to choose only one bookmaker, so all the players must take odds from his site, and are allowed to choose whichever match and market that exists in his offer; but it goes to disadvantage of players who don't have "real" accounts with that one bookmaker, so they probably won't bother to go there just for the sake of competition. From what I reckon, best solution for the beginning of competition would be to choose 10 to 15 biggest Euro leagues, and two or three markets (match odds, under/over 2.5 and maybe one or two more markets; it's not necessary to have fancy markets like "Time of first goal", "Number of corners", etc.), and then competition's Admin to copy odds to a separate thread in this forum, so to be easily available and equal for all players.

So, several ideas above; let's see if we can draw it into an interesting community activity! :Boom

How about a weekly or monthly league table of how traders have performed, as say a plus or minus percentage of their bank?

Of course there'd have to be an element of trust, unless results were proofed to an independent source, but the comparison would be interesting,

                  cheers, MC
