  • My diary of consistency... Hopefully!

    Hello all,

I'm new to the forum so I guess this is an introduction. I haven't bee trading that long. When I started I made the mistake of trying to tackle every type of trade across every kind of sport which, as you can imagine ended in disaster. After somewhat of a break, I simply couldn't stay away any longer. I was afraid to lose any more money. However I re-fuelled the Betfair account and am determined to make this work.

So now, for the time being at least I will only be concentrating on scalping in horse markets.

I started my bank at £100 a couple of weeks back. My stakes are only going to be 2% of my bank which I have managed to get up to £138 so I'm definitely making progress. Once it gets to £200 I will begin practising the tennis markets as these are the two areas I want to 'specialise' in. I enjoy watching tennis and, although I don't have too much of an interest in horse racing itself, I do really enjoy the way the markets move pre-race.

Not really expecting people to read this. Just using it as an avenue to vent both joy and frustration. This forum will be my accountability parter and help me get my discipline in check.

Thanks for reading and hello to you all,

    Leeroy

Hi Leeroy, I'm pretty much in the same boat as you. I was going to put up a diary when I start trading from Monday Next week. Been using Geeks Toy in training mode, but I'm keen to see how you progress :-)

    James.

      Hi James,

Thanks for the response. I think I am becoming quite consistent now, although don't want to get too complacent as I know I still have a bucket-load to learn.

What I found really hard to begin with and why I blew a couple of small banks was purely down to patience. I knew this was something I could achieve if I got my head down, but I wanted to the big money right away. As such, I took plenty of risks. I have started to overcome that now so hopefully, things will be good from here on in.

Was busy with the family this evening so didn't get chance to tackle many markets. But with stakes under the £3 mark (getting close), this isn't a bad result by any means.

I'm away until Sunday now with work but I'll be back on the markets next Tuesday.

nice one mate, look to be more consistent than me!

im in exactly the same position, been trading since april. ive learnt a lot in that time, but the most important lesson has been my emotions and learning to take losses....incredibly hard to fully appreciate until youve made the mistake a million times.

              good luck

I couldn't agree more. In many senses it's like learning a martial art. Discipline is key in order to conquer it.

Monday is usually a family day as I work away quite a bit. However the missus had some work to do when we got back from a day trip, so why not catch the tail end of the days horse markets.

One of the trades could have gone horribly wrong and in many senses it was a big gamble. Thankfully it paid off. Hit the £3 stakes mark also which I'm pretty excited about as it was only a few weeks ago when I was on £2.

£3.67 profit from 6 markets. What I find interesting is that if you explain this to a trader, they instantly understand the ROI and how this will grow, should I not be an idiot and blow it all from greed. However if I explain to the missus that I made £3 tonight, she laughs like hell

Been called away again with work so I won't be able to hit the markets again until Thur / Fri. Can't wait.

                      Hi Craigie,

Thanks for taking in interest in the thread. In terms of the screenshot, I don't know why it isn't showing the full thing. I'll browse the forum to see if there is anything on here as it is just a full-sized image I am uploading.

Had a change of scene yesterday. I was working at an event which was like judging a national paint-drying competition. As such I decided to try my attention to the football. In the past I haven't had much luck with football. After yesterday and looking back on my results, it seems my stakes were the problem, alongside the market that I was working in.

As you can see (hopefully) from the pic, the results were consistent. I was also pulling out of trades what weren't being successful. In the past, I was merely looking one goal ahead. This time, if I seen the stats were getting a little excited, I would lay the unders market two goals ahead of the current score. This way the odds moved a lot more slowly, allowing me to not have such a big loss if the stats settled down and I traded out.

Unfortunately there is still a slight streak of a gambler in me as the last two trades were against what I was doing previously. Which is a shame as this would have put my profit @ £8.58 which was an ROI of 5.04%. Instead it was only 2.82% ROI @ £4.81 profit.

I'm definitly coming to terms with how I am in myself and how this affects my trading. If I'm angry, upset, bored then I have a tendency to have a gamble. Yesterday I was the latter which in effect caused me to take a risk. I'm still learning and although I have a long way to go, I am still feeling proud of my overall ability to trade instead of gamble.

Can I ask what your strategy is with the pre race? Any plans or tactics you employ?
