  • Do or Die - A Personal Challenge

Do or Die, Fight or Flight, Make or Break, today i've opted for the former from all of these phrases. normally when one of these are applicable, the outcome is uncertain. with me it's no different, i've never really committed or approached a month's trading in this way so i'm really curious for the result

We all know how easy it can be to generate some green on the fair and similarly so how swiftly we can rack up losses [especially back-to-back ones]

In the past, naivety and short-term thinking has led me to bust many a bank and is why i come here with a 1-month challenge & a place to log my profits/loss where i can't pretend to myself not to have had that bad day by depositing some more bankroll

Many days i would have big green but bust banks can easily reset that. I'm aiming for a slower and less varying profit through trading. For me to take this with a serious tone i've told myself this will be my last ever deposit to betfair. Now obviously this may or may not be the case down the line but for this month at least, it's what i've tried to believe

if you end up following this, thank you. no doubt it'll help provide me with motivation to not c*ck it up...

    The challenge:
    Deposited £800 this morning
    Date range: 17th April - 16th May
This will be a purely pre-race horse race trading challenge, normally i'll dabble in-play but for the sake of avoiding varying results i'm putting my in-play strats on the shelf for the time being

    Rules
    1. No depositing during challenge
    2. No in-play this month whatsoever (In-play take SP will be used)
    3. Trading ends for the rest of the challenge period if my bank drops below £200
    4. If at the end of any day my balance is over 1,000 i'll withdraw any excess (back down to 1,000)
    5. State any days off in advance
    6. Make it out alive

P&L will be posted @ end of each day along with any thoughts i may be having

Thoughts #1: Unsure how i will approach the first day. Will most likely skip some markets or start out slowly to gain some confidence (chuck's top tip imo!)

Good luck mate, I'll follow with interest. I've done 2 of these in the past; the first I succeeded when I thought I'd fail, the second I failed when I was sure I'd succeed. I did find that posting results on here everyday added a bit of pressure.

an unusual day today, started out low stakes and upped as the day went on, then the 17.45 came along where betfair suspended the market and never turned it in play. i had exited my trade but all my traded profit was left riding on the favourite. so although i didn't take a loss there i missed out on a few extra quid as he went on to lose. might've put me on tilt a bit or perhaps a coincidence as i took a heavy £40 loss in the following race - i was confident in the move, or so i thought at the time, so i doubled or tripled my position and it turned 5 ticks through the crossover so i took took the loss (interestingly the full move was 4.2 -> 3.45 in the end, just a few months back i probably would've held on to that trade and got burned).
Then along came the crazy punter, if not a punter i'm guessing it was a trader who perhaps got caught on that 17.45 race and started chasing losses afterwards. either way, they were risking £20,000 to £50,000 in the next 5-10 races. They were clearing out 15 ticks with this genuine money from nowhere race on race which was pretty hilarious to see. after a couple races i caught on and made a few quid but the first couple moves got me on the wrong side. Oh, and i got MAULED at Bath today but not sure why will have to reflect later, might be coincidence but probably something i missed, thankfully its not on the card tomorrow

tl;dr an ok day, sort of what i expected profit wise - later in this challenge i'll be aiming for a few £100+ days

Amazing weather here definitely helped me mentally when dealing with some losses today, if it wasnt for the absoulte STONKING drift on Excilly 14.45 @ Thirsk it would have been a losing day. some great horse racing and atmosphere from a spectator point of view for sure - amazing flat performance from Intilaaq! I touched +180 for the day actually but got a bit carried away and paid the penalty late on but another satisfactory day

Student life tonight, will be hanging tomorrow no doubt so i'll either go super small stakes or take part only in the second half of markets

great night but it took its toll, i noticed that feeling unwell helped me to sit patiently and i was more inclined to skip a trade if i was on the fence about entering or not whereas normally i'd probably take the position anyway
not much in the way of profit today but i feel like i gained some experience being in the markets

it seems you've miscategorised me, do you see me pushing an ebook or anything with montery value at all? no. that's because i don't have one and i don't plan to create one either, feel free to quote me on that in the future if you still have the same unhealthy mindset

if you're referring to my video that i made and posted on here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VST2iJHnTWI - from my understanding it has added to the helpful content that is currently available to do with people learning to trade and it was not created as a means to an end

i'm just doing the usual stuff [scalping/swing/range trading/guessing and pushing money around] and following a staking plan. in the past variance of my stakes has led me to be net positive in ticks for the day and still be at a loss. Why are you complaining about a lack of entry and exit points for my trades, have you completely missed the point of a trade log/diary? When i checked the rules before posting this nowhere did i find that this was required

i understand it must be hard for you to see that not everyone is out to steal your money when the scene is so tainted by unnecessary content-pushing. but imo it's down to the purchaser of the content to truly evaluate if something is worth their money. If they go a and buy a duff ebook then i'd consider it a 'bad trade'

it really is very disappointing to see your contempt rather than your support. with your post count i would infer you have stumbled across trading yourself and know that it if you're not doing it for your own reasons / self progression then not only will you most likely fail as a trader you will have wasted your time

please don't bring further negativity to my thread as it can be terribly infectious

30min gaps for the evening races making me twitchy & impatient again

if you're curious about how i can let a loss get that big; happened cus i put up implied resistance/fake money trying to get my small stake on the lay side matched. silly in hindsight but i've been doing it often when im done w/ my last scalp and its paid off without any issues in the past. so practically had no position open anticipating a bounce if anything and got simply wrecked by someone sweeping out 3 ticks. didn't plan to enter, therefore had no planned exit. froze up and watched as it get worse & worse, we've all been there. thankfully it happens much less often nowadays.

since i mentioned a low point in the day i'll also mention a highlight - i was dead chuffed with a race where i scalped £10 from a race using £16/£32 stakes, took 15 mins but i got around 100 bets (50 ticks!) matched in total - http://imgur.com/QPiv9K3 felt incredibly easy, probably a bit lucky that it never broke out from the largeish range in an unexpected manner but i like to think it could be signs that i have increased my awareness a bit in whats likely or possible to happen depending on the information in front of me - it just all felt so controllable, maybe cus i was in profit the whole time my judgment were a little skewed. time will tell

saw an interesting vid recently and they discussed limiting liability/exposure to stay consistent

tomorrow i will mess around with limiting my liability for any one trade
i'll use 1.5% of my bankroll, so if a loss gets to £15 i will red up and walk away from that race regardless of how longs left til the start of the race
expecting a lower strike rate but should be a fun little experiment considering w/ my normal approach i take a loss at least around 40 quid most days

Are you aware that there is a bomber who push his back bets with huge amounts of money (20-30k)? Did not see he makes lay bets, but if you put fake resistance money not only on back side - you will be in trouble.
