There has always been some resentment towards Europe for policies which many felt were unfair and sometimes silly. Nevertheless, people in the UK tolerated Europe.

There has been a dramatic change in popular opinion in the UK during the last two years and this, I believe, is due in part to the current world economic climate. More and more people are turning against Europe and the number of people who want to leave the EEU is increasing quickly. I never thought it would be possible for the UK to leave Europe but it is now a distinct possibility.

The European Court of Justice wants prisoners to have the right to vote. The people of the UK will never allow that to happen. This is just one example where the UK will not comply with European directives.

There has been large scale immigration into the UK and this is a source of great resentment.

The UK Independence party, UKIP, is becoming very popular. It isn't a racist party and its stated aims are to remove the UK from Europe for the benefit of all living in the UK and this includes the immigrants. They had their best election results ever yesterday.

I'm not saying that what is happening is a good thing. I have no doubt that the UK is becoming more anti-Europe every day.

Given the change of mood in the country, it isn't surprising that some businesses are also changing their attitudes.

I'm quite sad about the way my country is changing but I can't do anything to change what will happen in future.

So, I'm not surprised by Betdaq's actions.

Yeah Its the same with Scotland and the UK. A lot of people in Scotland doesn't want to be under the crown anymore and its growing. There will be a referendum in 2014 and we may see something that a lot of generations haven't seen befpre...

This is only a guess, but Betdaq have been making a lot of commercial changes recently, which does suggest that Ladbrokes may be buying them after all.

This can only be good for us... Betdaq can make a lot of competition to Betfair if they get some money behind their backs...

Well, here in Portugal they've notified about their changes, and we are still eligible to bet. I'm puzzled about the lack of information regarding this subject. The clients were notified, but I can't find a public announcement whatsoever.

                  Cheers,
                  Pedro

Geek - from your point of view would a Ladbrokes buy-out be a good thing?

Although liquidity on Betdaq is still a big issue in the cricket markets I'm not sure Ladbrokes getting involved is the answer.

Sometimes it's better the devil you know?!?

Anything that gives a viable alternative to Betfair can only be good for consumers.

Everything is going to depend on the Budget statement which is due to be made on December 5. There has been a lot of activity and I believe that the bookmakers/exchanges will act quickly when they know what their tax liability is going to be.

Their present offshore arrangements could be obliterated if a "point of service" tax was to be introduced. I think this is the reason behind the ditching of some countries as the exchanges seek to rationalise their operations.

If there is radical change, it is possible that Betfair commission rates would increase to over 6% so as to make the trader pay for the increased Corporation Tax bill. Naturally, the Premium Charge would also be increased.

The UK Government are on a sure winner here. The vast majority of the general public will not be concerned about the effective imposition of a betting tax.

What I find puzzling, however, is how High Street bookmakers are going to react. They will not be allowed to impose a sort of direct betting tax themselves, so, where will the money come from to enable them to pay their increased tax bills ?

The more I think about it the more sensible it would seem to be for Ladbroke's to diversify and enter the betting exchange industry. Their extra tax bills would be funded by the commission they charge on their exchange. The logical conclusion is that Betdaq would no longer be a low commission exchange if they were taken over by Ladbrokes.

So, please brace yourselves for commission rates of 6% ( and 7.5 % if the government should feel a little greedy )

Increasing the commission ok? But do you really think that they can increase the premium charge as well? Isn't it high enough ?? - After all they increased the commissions in australia, but they didn't increase the premium charge - they created a whole new charge, but this tax if for layers only and its based on the another way of charge in Australia. So I can see why they may increase the commission but can't see a reason why would they increase the PC? Or at least I hope so.
