Not tried it recently, but I used to dabble in doing it for small money 3-4 years ago. I don't believe it's a consistent money-maker TBH. I found Lingfield worked quite well, as the horse which lead into the home straight usually got caught, but maybe traded quite short before it got caught. You really need 3 or even 4 horses to trade short to make any money, because you will always be paying out on the winner. Anyway, that's just my view. I'm sure some might have found a way to make it pay.
With all this talk of bingo and Peckham, I can't help but reminisce of all the times my Nan used to take me into the New Cross Social Club, Hornshay Street, as a nipper. The war heroes would get up on stage, wearing their Sunday best, and sing away. Tom Jones' 'My, my, my Delilah' could often be heard being tortured, interspersed with the occasional game of bingo. Happy days! If truth be told, I had ambitions on becoming a bingo caller ...
My Dad was born in a street off New Cross Rd very close to the Old Den. The nearest battle cruiser was the Marquis of Granby, next to the jellied eel shop. We are going back a few years though .
