  • Football trading for a living

I imagine it must be a solitary, anti-social one, right? One where you're hiding in a room on your own whilst others are out enjoying their weekend/evening. I keep getting invites to go out which is fine now as I'm only earning beer money but if it were a serious income for me, a Saturday afternoon shopping with SWMBO (should I ever get one) would be a seriously big day where I'd have avoided making an income.

How do you deal with it? Do you have an understanding wife? Or just no life?

i trade horses in the afternoon and when the races are finished i go out if i dont have work to do (i'm freelance).
i work at the computer 8 hours per day + trading + emails, facebook, youtube etc is A LOT of time in front of the screen, so, when i can, i try to get out as much as possible to not let internet take over my life.

usually my most profitable days are saturdays and sundays, and in winter is not a big problem, but in spring/summer i'm forced to choose between trading or trips in motorcycle with friends (and naturally most of the times i choose the second option).

Do you notice your profit is much lower? I know there are more races with liquidity during the week hence I stated football trading but perhaps it is the same with horses?

yes, i think weekends off would have a higher impact on football trading.
on horseracing, there are enough races in the weekdays so weekend have smaller impact. my system has big ups and downs, so i cant know exactly the impact of a weekend off, but in the long term i noticed that weekends are more profitable since there are many more races than a weekday

Ah, right, so still would affect the bottom line if you were to go away every weekend.

Trading football is the equivalent of working nights and weekends nights really if your covering the main European leagues. Not much football weekday mornings and afternoons, that'll be your time to have leisure time. Although I don't consider watching football as a job, it's more light entertainment and the trading bit enables you to make money whilst enjoying the football.

Yeah, I wouldn't say it's as bad as a job. I'd happily accept making a living from football trading instead of having to do the 9 to 5.

But I don't think I am anti social. I really want to go out there but I need the fcuking money! Transforming all my style and go for it. Facebook is helping me a lot lol.
The worst problem is all my friends work when I am not and all my friends are not working when I am

Why would it have to be solitary when it's football? A social sport to watch? I don't know about you... but when I am watching it with friends who enjoy the sport and also know their stuff about the players and stuff, I can see much better what moves I should make to trade the match. You don't have to trade all matches that appear on betfair... On the contrary, every country's league is different, the teams have different styles of play, you should specialize in one league, it's also easier to trade when the liquidity is high... You should choose the matches you're going to trade and invest higher stakes in these games.

Anyway, just trying to help and show you that it doesn't have to be solitary

You need to make friends with football traders near you. Or night shift workers. Or the unemployed. Or students.

Don't worry its not so bad as I described it Just lost 60 EUR and I am really pissed off! But I really like the horses more - you make a lot more money for less hours! Btw the real problems started with the PC - this is really something I dont like - I killing my ass for 350 EUR per week and they take 60-70 out of them !@?! Just need to learn the horses! I can't make enough money on footie Try not to make my mystake if you can do it... A girl wont be able to stand around you if you trade more than 5-6 hours when shes around. Imagine that situation - She is going to work on normal hours. You don't have what to do because footie starts later. After she is coming back she is looking at you staring at the comp and you don't want to fcuk her, because you are working. This is bad Don't do it!

About that - I really need to be fully concentrated when I am trading. Just my style...

I went to Rugby match Saturday (Munster, what a dire game) and the pub on Sunday and hence did not trade.

I find that I become nutty if I trade without a break and obsess over every market regardless of the sport.

I traded tonight and was moderately successful (LINKY) but enjoyed it.

Never took breaks before, overtraded, lost, then lost more, was really relaxed tonight and traded about 40% of the markets I usually try to and enjoyed it for the first time in weeks. Easy to become obsessive in this game, you guys are correct, take regular breaks.

Yeah, me too, I can't do this with horses, only football. I can be concentrated during the match because everyone is quiet while the match is playing. It's when decisive things happen that everyone starts getting emotional :P but even then, I can think clearly about what to do. The key thing here is to not enter tilt mode, or emotional mode. If you just observe and decide based on what you see, you'll do well.
