Geeks Toy now runs on Linux

I hope that this Christmas present isn't coming too late. Today i managed to install Geeks Toy on my linux system so now i will share my information with others.

This is a small how-to guide on how to install and run latest stable Geeks Toy version (1.1k) on your linux system.

Geeks Toy is only supported on Windows systems so you can't blame anyone but yourself if something fails miserably.

1) install linux that you like (i have Linux Mint 12 x86_64) and update your system;

xxxx@yyyy ~/Desktop $ uname -a
Linux Station 3.0.0-12-generic

2) install wine (check that it also installs "winetricks");

xxxx@yyyy ~/Desktop $ wine --version
wine-1.3.28

3) now that we have wine on our system we need to install some Windows files;

install these components using "winetricks" command:
* allfonts
* dotnet20 (probably dotnet20sp2 would be better if you can get that crap to install properly)
* msscript
* msxml4
* vb6run
* vcrun2008

4) altough Geeks Toy requires .Net Framework 3.5 it installs just fine with the 2.0 version => install Geeks Toy just like you would do that in a Windows system;

5) if everything went fine then lets start Geeks Toy - click on the desktop shortcut or run it from it's main folder ( /home/<your_name>/.wine/drive_c/Program Files/The Geek/AGT Pro/ )



On my system there are some visual glitches, but that could be explained because i have ATI video driver (and i might have forgot to install some components through winetricks).

Overall the performance is good, it's a bit slower than on Windows, but it still works properly.

Thank you very much RobinHood, I've just tried this on my Mepis box and can confirm that it works, although sluggish as it only has 1 gig of ram and no graphics card. Now it's time to repartition my main pc and install something light like Antix to see how it runs.

With a good vmware version and proper configuration you can get the same response time as on a native windows. In virtualbox response time very rarely goes below 150ms.

i use mint 12 KDE. It's a excellent distro. Try it

What a very interesting thread, for my new Job that I start in early May they have Linux as their standard desktop.

So I will have to see how I get on installing it.

has anyone successfully managed to install version 1.2 on wine?

(I have a netbook and vmware/virtualbox just hogs my system down so am avoiding virtual machine setups and prefer to run it straight from linux).

after several attempts I have been unable to run TGT betdaq under linus mint 12.

can anyone tell me why I get this error when trying to login to TGT?

EDIT - just tried installing and running TGT betfair and get the same error.

What version of dotnet did you use? I got similiar errors as yours trying firstly to install it with dotnet20sp2. After some attempts, trying different versions of wine I found that it was dotnet that caused all of those errors. With dotnet20 it finally works. It works, but at this stage on my old machine it's unfortunately too slow to use it under linux.

I installed dotnet20 not dotnet20sp2 since the op said sp was glitchy. Still scratching my head. Cant get it to run under wine after following OPs instructions.
