Glad to hear you sorted the problem. Just wanted to say for anyone else reading this, that you really need a selection of 'anti' programs on your computer. I clean up infected computers for people and it's very rare to run just one clean-up tool and find that that gets everything.

For those foolish enough to believe the adverts for things like Norton 360 and the like, don't. They won't give you complete protection and in my experience, the free ones are the best anyway. (just like AGT)

I have just been having a conversation with my brother about Norton. He has just renewed his subscription and ended up with the blue screen of death!

Here's what I use [all free]:

Norton is a pile of poo, and worse than what it protects you from imo...

If you don't download and run dodgy executables or email attachments or install things from dodgy web sites you don't really need any protection software.

I have AVG free anti virus but it's never found anything apart from dodgy email attachments in spam mail that I wouldn't have opened anyway.
If you want more luck... Take more chances!

Been using NOD32 for a few years, found it pretty smart and fast enough

i'll give you an example of Norton, before I tell you which ones I use.

A while back I sorted out a highly infected computer for a young lad. It had about every cyber nasty know to man on it! His Mum had been off to PC World for some help and they had sold her a copy of Norton. This had been installed and used for a couple of weeks, but the computer was still running slower than one of the horses I back.

I started to try and clean it up, using various free cleaning programs from the internet. Remember, Norton was still on this machine - and so were the nasties. I'd got it almost clean, but one nasty was still hanging on in there. To cut a long story short, when I deleted Norton, I was also able to get rid of the last nasty, cos Norton had actually being protecting it! (I kid you not)

So, my advice would be to delete Norton and put the cost down to experience. Don't try running 2 different sorts of anti-virus on your computer at the same time. On my own machines, I use the free versions of the following. AVG anti-virus (although seriously thinking of going over to Avast, which i believe is now better) Malwarebytes, SuperAntiSpyware and Spybot Search and Destroy. Those should keep most things away - but you have to remember to run them and ALWAYS do the update first. Also worth having on your PC are Defraggler and CCleaner.

i bought kaspersky and i must say it's good, but sometimes it doesnt find bad stuff until i do the complete system scan (and it takes a whole day, since i use the computer for work and i got 3 hard disks 500 + 300 +300).
but it's ok, i start the scan, i leave it on all night and it's finished in the morning.

by the way, lately i updated a site for a client of mine, and the day after they told me there was an infected page... i hope the malware didn't come from my pc!

As Cran stated if you're sensible you don't need any add on protection cluttering up the system but I try not to be sensible. If you choose to download spybot search and destroy along with a big brand antivirus/spyware program then check compatibility. Or just don't download the teatimer and its updates (untick last box) and there should be no issues. Also spyware blaster is a very useful tool and is of course free. I use mcafee (along with the above plus malwarebytes) because I've secured myself a free lifetime subscription for it and some of the programs facilities are especially useful for moi.

Kaspersky is ok, but I find NOD32 much faster. It takes an hour or so to check my PC pretty thoroughly.

                          Hi

HiJack This is a good one but a little bit involved. You have to copy and paste the reslts of the log on their site to analyse the prob. It's found a few for me when the others have failed.
I think the more anti's you have on your computer the better. At one time I would only use AVG but that let me down a few times so I now use it in conjunction with the other progs mentioned here.Spybot is very good.

was a persistent prob 10 years ago, but the 'goodies' have outflanked the 'baddies' in recent years

Only snag I've had recently is baddies trying to inflict their search engine on me, as the default search, not a prob to offload.

All progs attach themselves to our start up, slowing down the start up process, have got shot of 'em by typing msconfig into 'run' & unticking whatever, don't know what I'm doing, but have speeded up start up ok.
