  • wireless for trading ?

    Hi,
have never gone wireless, except for mouse & keyboard.

Does it make any difference to trading ?

Speed very important, any views appreciated.

I would advise against it, as it adds another aspect of risk to your trading.

I have a wireless router on the kids PC. Internet runs like a dog vs wired.

Personally I still use a wired mouse on my trading PC, as the last thing I want is the fecker to run of of battery at a crucial moment.

Agreed. Whilst it sounds awesome to be able to sit at the side of a pool sipping cocktails and working on that tan, all you need is a wireless problem and you're screaming in panic.

I don;t think using a wireless router makes much difference. I can;t genuinely tell any difference between wired or wireless and i am really anal when it comes to my connection. I can tell whether I am using a cable connection or an adsl connection just by how the price moves on the ladder. As long as you have a good wireless card and a decent router and there isn;t masses of distance between the 2 I really wouldn;t worry about trading over a wireless connection.

As for wireless mice and keyboards, the last time I said I wasn;t going to use a wireless mouse because its something else that can go wrong my mouse froze mid trade because the wire going into the front of the mouse had broke! If you are wary of the battery going get a wireless mouse that you can also plug in.

Same here , I use wireless and a laptop and never had any problems. Router's in another room and just can't be arsed to go under the floorboards to cable things up, might be a different situation if my connection was dodgy but I get a stable 16Mb thru wireless so it's never been an issue.

I had major problems when I first started trading. Was on the couch with laptop, wireless connection. Dropouts all the time, dodgy connection. Admittedly, I have changed routers since then, but I will never go back to that amount of risk. Obviously if you can set it up to be secure, then all for it, but if you have the option, always choose wired. That goes for everything. Not saying it being wired is a failsafe, but I feel a lot more comfortable knowing that everything is plugged in as it should be.
Pretty sure in the place I am now, there is some fair interference. Often have trouble watching movies through my wireless connection into the main room. Would hate for that to happen when trading.
So while some people will claim that their wireless connection is as good as their wired, I think that it will differ from house to house, depending on other factors. What is good for some, is not neccessarily good for everybody.

have you tried changing the channel the wireless is using?

Wouldn't even know anything about any of that. I live in my bedroom anyway, so it is only my housemate that misses out. I have phone line/pay tv in my room for work anyway so wireless is the last of my worries right now.

Not suggesting that I wouldn't fix it if I knew how though?

You can ping your router over wireless and over lan. For me it makes 1.5ms difference(0.30ms cable, 1.80ms wireless) so i stay with cable.
Betfair is not the answere, it's the question.
                  ....and the answere is NO!!!

its easy just login to your wireless router (type the ip address thats on the back of it) login and password are also on the back of it. Go to the wireless settings and change the channel number. It now uses a different channel.

I had a problem with my portable router I use with my ipad in costa coffee and it just wouldn;t work at all. I could see I had a good signal it just seemed to have some sort of interference. I found the channel, changed it and all of a sudden worked fine. Not sure why you needed the story here but try it anyway might help with the movies streaming!!

Here's the thing. You may never have problems. But if you do, you don't want to be caught short. I always have my broker's number and my account/log in to hand...

If I had the choice I'd certainly use wired over wireless but these days wireless routers are pretty much stable and reliable and there's plenty more things that are likely to go wrong for me than a dropped connection and I can't see that extra 1.5ms making too much difference to my trading

There's a recession on you know! Wasting £500 on a backlit paperweight and a second mortgage on coffee is just not on!

Anyone would think you were a pro trader or summink.

Tem I had problems a while back with wifi dropouts and found it was simply the crypt protocol as after I changed from wep to wpa all was good ! I would trade over wireless N or draft. But not G. Jmpov
