  • Wifi V Hardwired (LAN)

For trading i use a 17" laptop with 2.4mhz processor, 3GB ram usually i use the laptop on wifi, today i thought lets try it with the cable(lan) plugged in and directly connected to the modem to see if it was any quicker, i am not sure but it did seem faster, yet i have done 2x speedtests as shown below with different results, nb the speeds are faster in the daytime.

    Cable

    Wifi

Virtually no difference there - what you are interested in is the ping not the download speed as you are downloading a relatively small amount of information each call.

I have used a wireless -n to trade over yet I found the calls lower than the Hard wired! Also more things can go wrong when going wireless! I don't even have a wireless keyboard and mouse! for fear of the batteries dying during a trade!:Naughty

yes thats something the Geek said today, that the wireless could go down, think i'll stay with the cable plugged in when trading from now on, i too use a wired Mouse rather than the touchpad or indeed wired for the same reasons you state.

Hi - like Leon has said what your are really looking for is the result of the ping test, which is the speed of transmission from your equipment to a remote workstation.

Standard retail broadband is sold as adsl meaning the download speeds and upload speeds are different, download much higher than the upload or the business broadband is sdsl meaning both the upload and download are the same speed.

From your router there is usually 4*RJ45 ports which on standard routers are 100Mbps so in effect this limits the maximum speed you can transmit at (but the 100Mbps is higher than all available retail broadband connections currently available), so now back to the wireless. Standard router transmit out at 54Mpbs or 108Mpbs but with wireless you can have fluctuations in the rate available depending on where the computer is situated in comparison to the router.

If you are serious about your trading I think you will definitly need a physical connection.

Yeah called it right Leon I was kind of cheating, that is my VPS. I am not a manual trader though so my bot runs on the VPS.

Ah okay - the use of VPS's hasn't been public knowledge for long so people see these effectively zero pings and think that is what they are getting. If you are running your boot on the VPS then it is but if you are manually trading then there is still the link from your home to the VPS.

It makes for a nice advantage for the bot guys though - they get to see it before any normal trader.

i have pretty big experience in online games playing in online games ping is essential, lets say in famous counter strike game, people with hardwired conections always have ping like 10 - 20 ms, while with wifi pings are 60 - 150, almost impossible to play, you are dead before you see enemy i have tryed several wifi's and on average ping is 3 times worse than wired, btw seems it depends on weather conditions too

I don't even use a wireless mouse for trading, just in case the effing batteries go at the wrong time.

                        What's new in version 1.2

funny you say that I used to say the same thing until my wired mouse stopped working mid trade one day!! Luckily I was on a laptop so I managed to get out no problem. The wire into the mouse had broken!! Literally made to eat my words!

Since then I use a wireless one that can also be used as a wired one. Best of both worlds!!
